Lance has published a number of research papers on the history and theory of architecture, and these essays have been widely cited in books and academic journals and taught in schools. “Hidden Lines” was included in a 2012 Routledge compendium of architectural theory that includes the writing of Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, and Robert Venturi. "Slumming in Utopia,” which coined the term "protest construction,” won the JAE Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA).

Uses the Trojan Horse as the precursor to a long line of built structures infiltrating public space.

Examines the use of construction as a means of political protest. Coined the term "protest construction." Won the ACSA's JAE Award (2001).
